Most Prevalent Disabilities
1. Asthma 2. Diabetes 3. Epilepsy Asthma is defined under IDEA as it is considered to be a "health impaired" disability if it adversely affects the student's educational learning or interferes with their learning. (Symptoms: coughing, wheezing, chest tightness) (Texas Education Agency) Diabetes - A child who has diabetes must show that he or she needs special education and or related services in order for education to be beneficial. IDEA is a federal law in which provides a "free, appropriate public education" to children with diabetes so they can be educated to the best of their ability just like all the other children. It may be too difficult to learn when a child's blood sugar is too high or low or a child may miss a lot of class because of issues with diabetes - this is when he or she can receive other related services to assist in their education. (American Diabetes Association 1995-2015) Epilepsy - IDEA defines epilepsy as a medical condition that produces seizures that affects many mental and physical functions in the body. This can also be called a seizure disorder (if a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are diagnosed with epilepsy). (Epilepsy Foundation, 2012) Sam Passer |
