Diabetes Definition:
- When a person eats their body turns food into sugars, or glucose. The pancreas are supposed to release insulin. Insulin opens cells, allowing the glucose to enter. The glucose is used for energy. People with diabetes, this system doesn't work. Since their body is producing glucose for energy; they have a lack of energy. That's why people use insulin to give them energy and other reasons.
Causes of Diabetes:
- "Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin due to the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In type 1 diabetes—an autoimmune disease—the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells." (Diabetes.niddk.nih.gov, 2015)
- "Type 2 diabetes—the most common form
of diabetes—is caused by a combination of
factors, including insulin resistance, a condition
in which the body’s muscle, fat, and liver
cells do not use insulin effectively. Type 2
diabetes develops when the body can no
longer produce enough insulin to compensate
for the impaired ability to use insulin. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older people who are also overweight or obese. The disease, once rare in youth, is becoming more common in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Scientists think genetic susceptibility and environmental factors are the most likely triggers of type 2 diabetes." (Diabetes.niddk.nih.gov, 2015)

Accommodations:
- Unrestricted access to use the bathroom, allowed necessary food and water on schedule as needed, and students can't miss meals because they can't afford; the charged meal will be billed to the parents.
- Students will be a given a detailed schedule and staff as well, teacher will facilitate the time of monitoring, treatment and food consumption, and the student will be able to give their tests in a safe designated area.
- Seat the student near the teacher, arrange classroom to ensure physical accessibility, allow the student additional break or rest time, and seat the student in an area free from distractions.
Modifications:
- The school should implement diabetes management program. The program will have trained staff to help students with their glucose testing and etc.
- Tape lessons so the student can listen to them again, reduce paper and pencil tasks, and allow the student extra time to complete tasks and tests in case he or she needs to leave the classroom to check blood sugar and do testing.
Scenarios:
- A student with diabetes requires accommodation to maintain blood sugar. The student's parents have juice and crackers for the student to eat during break before Phy Ed. This student is allowed to go out in the hallway and check his or her blood sugar three times a day. The parents give their child a watch with a beeper to remind when to check blood sugar, give insulin, and eat. The teacher needs to document this detailed schedule and remind the student of his or her schedule activities.
- A student needs to check his or her blood sugar and give themselves insulin during NWEA testing. The teacher has a trained adult help the student. The student is allowed to make up the time he or she lost during the test the same day or the following day. Trisha Roiger
