Asthma
Asthma is a chronic disease that inflames and narrows the airways.
Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. There are more than 25 million people who have asthma in the United States, and about 7 million of that 25 million are children. According to the National Health Interview Survey in 2011, in the US, asthma is more prevalent in adult females than adult males. In children however, it is more prevalent in young boys than young girls.
Causes of Asthma
Inflamed airways and airway constrictions are the main components of asthma. Both inflamed airways and airway constrictions affect the airway to your lungs, which makes it hard to breathe. Almost all people who have asthma have allergies

Characteristics of Asthma
-Inflammation of the bronchial tubes with increased production of sticky secretions inside the tubes
Symptoms may include:
Symptoms may vary from every asthma attack
Mild asthma attacks are common, and the airways may open up within a few minutes to a few hours
Severe asthma attacks are less common and need medical attention immediately

Accommodations
- Provide inhalant herapy assistance
- removed allergens (hair spray, lotion, perfumes, paint, latex)
- Provide access to water, gum, etc.
- Make health care needs known to appropriate staff
- Adjust for administration of medications
Modifications
- Make field trips that might aggravate the condition non-mandatory and supply video
- Adapt the curriculum expectations when needed (ex. science class, physical education etc.)
Scenarios
-A child has exercise educed asthma, when he runs for long periods of time he has asthma attacks. During gym class the gym teacher needs to provide his inhaler and monitor his asthma.
-A child has asthma attacks that are triggered from dust. The class is going to be taking a trip to a farm to learn more about farm animals. The teacher makes this field trip non-mandatory for the child and video tapes the excursion.
